20 Jan. Merton. Because they did not have it. To the prior and convent of St. Mary de Walsingham. 1 Whereas for the king’s war that he lately endured in Gascony and other arduous business touching his state and realm, the king is still not able to fully ordain concerning the state of the converts he asks him carefully 2 that he will wish to provide the bearer of these presents throughout two years with victuals and other necessaries, so that if he is not then content with his daily allowance, then from their works they are to bestow three and a half pence per day upon him for his maintenance, alleging no excuse upon this the king’s petition whereby the king ought to be anxious therefor at another time, because the king wills by all means possible that his prayers in this matter are to be heard favourably by them. Having heard these prayers thus, they will, by reciprocal grace, obtain grace and favour from the king, writing back to him by one of them to show how they shall have been led to hear these the king’s prayers.
