Order to the sheriff of Nottinghamshire to deliver that manor with the aforesaid soke and all its appurtenances to the aforesaid Walter to keep, as aforesaid, together with all things taken therefrom after the aforesaid Michaelmas and to cause the aforesaid stock to be valued by the oath of trustworthy and law-worthy men. Order to the sheriff of Wiltshire, that having accepted security from the aforesaid Robert for two marks to be rendered to the king at the Exchequer, namely one moiety at the next Exchequer of Easter and the other moiety at the Exchequer of Michaelmas next following for his relief, to cause the same Robert to have full seisin of all the lands and tenements together with the aforesaid bailiwick which the aforesaid Leticia held of the king in chief and which were taken into the king’s hand by reason of her death.

Concerning the castle and manor of St. Briavels which have been committed. The king has committed to Robert Walerand custody of the castle and manor of St. Briavels and the forest of Dean with appurtenances from Michaelmas in the thirty-ninth year until the end of five years next following, so that in the meantime he is to have all the issues and proceeds of the king’s demesnes, annual rents and the king’s weirs of the same manor and also of foreign lands and of the great mines, external forges of the aforesaid forest and customs of pit-coal which is led beyond the right of way of the [river] Severn through the aforesaid forest to Gloucester, [and also of] pasturage, wind-fallen wood, covet (‘cooperonu’’) thrown down by the wind, pannage, ashes (‘cinerum’), nuts (‘nutui’’), and chestnut-trees of the same forest together with the perquisites of the same forest and hallmoot of St. Briavels, and of the cordwainers and sieve makers of the aforesaid forest. And he is to render in respect thereof per annum at the Exchequer £160 namely one moiety at the Exchequer of Easter and the other moiety at the Exchequer of Michaelmas. He is to keep the aforesaid castle and aforesaid forest at his own cost. And the king’s great forge of the same forest shall remain to the king to dispose of according to his will. The king by a fine of 10 m. which the burgesses of Rochester had made with the king has rendered to them his vill of Rochester which was taken into the king’s hand by the king’s justices lately itinerant Rochester for the escape of William de Wilminton’ [who] was arrested at Rochester on suspicion of theft. Order to the sheriff of Kent, that having taken security from the aforesaid burgesses for the aforesaid 10 m. to be rendered to the king at St. Edward which will be in the next vigil of the Epiphany of the Lord, to restore the aforesaid vill to the same burgesses, unless it has been taken into the king’s hand for another cause, ¹ saving to the king the amercements of other forfeitures of the aforesaid burgesses before the aforementioned justices of the king. ² Afterwards they paid those ten marks into the king’s Wardrobe as is contained below. Because the king accepts through an inquisition which Gilbert of Preston caused to be made that Alan le Blout who by the king’s bailiffs of Lincoln was taken for suspicion of theft and committed to Alan son of William of Lincoln to be kept in prison died in that prison through the harshness and oppression of the same prison and not by the order of Alan son of William [and that] neither is the same Alan culpable of the death of the aforesaid Alan Blout, he has pardoned the same Alan son of William the suit of peace which belongs to him for the aforesaid death, and [he has given him] firm [peace] etc. And for that pardon, he gives the king 100s., of which he paid 50s. in the king’s Wardrobe to Artald de Sancto Romano, keeper etc., and he will pay the remaining 50s. in the same Wardrobe at next Easter. Concerning assent to an election. The king has given his royal assent and favour to the election and confirmation of Robert de Pappewurth, canon of St. Bartholomew’s, London, as prior of the same place, and has rendered to him that priory and all the lands and tenements pertaining to the same priory. Order to John Walerand, king’s escheator or his locum tenens in the aforesaid priory to cause the same Robert to have full seisin of the same priory and all the lands and tenements pertaining to the same priory.

28 Nov. Windsor. For Hugh son of Ralph. The king by a fine of 30 m. of silver which the citizens of Canterbury have made with the king to be paid in gold in the king’s Wardrobe at the next St. Edward which will be in the vigil of the Epiphany of the Lord has delivered to them his vill of Canterbury which by order of Gilbert of Preston and his associates, king’s justices, who lately itinerated at Canterbury, was held into the king’s hand because the aforesaid citizens had taken a duel concerning a certain approver in the city of Canterbury in the king’s liberty without warrant. Order to the sheriff of Kent to restore the aforesaid vill to the same citizens with all things taken therefrom from the time of the taking of the same vill into the king’s hand, saving to the king purprestures made against the king in the same vill and the suburbs of the same vill, which by the oath of trustworthy and law-worthy men external men, the aforesaid sheriff is to cause to be valued, namely as to what they shall be worth per annum in all issues, and to cause that appraisal under his seal and the seal of those by whom this will be done [to be sent] distinctly and openly to the king, as the aforesaid citizens are to answer therefor each year at the Exchequer beyond the farm of the aforesaid vill if they shall wish to. ¹ Afterwards they paid in the king’s Wardrobe to Artald de Sancto Romano those 30 m. and are quit.

Robert le Bustler’, son and heir of William the Butler, has entreated the king that whereas the same William his father had made fine with the king before H. of Bath and his associates, king’s justices, by 20 m. for his redemption because by the jurors of a certain attaint, summoned and taken by the king’s order before the aforementioned justices he was convicted of a false oath sworn in a certain assize of novel disseisin of which he was one of the jurors and at the time of the death of same William the greater part of the same debt had remained to be rendered to the king, by reason the arrears of which his lands have lain untilled through two years and more, the king concerning 15 m. which still remain to be rendered of the aforesaid debt cared to show him grace. Because the king is informed for certain by an inquisition which he caused to be made by the sheriff of Cambridgeshire that all the land of the aforesaid Robert does not exceed in value five shillings per annum, the king has granted to the same that concerning the aforesaid 15 m. he is to render 5s. at the Exchequer of next Michaelmas and thus from year to year 5s. at the same term until the aforesaid 15 m. are paid to the king. 11 May. Windsor. Concerning the counties of Cambridgeshire and Huntingdonshire which have been committed. The king has committed to William de Stowe custody of the counties of Cambridgeshire and Huntingdongshire together with the king’s castle of Cambridge for as long as it pleases the king, so that he is to answer at the Exchequer for ten marks of increment for the aforesaid counties beyond that which John de Marines late sheriff of the same counties was accustomed to answer therefor. ¹ And he has letters patent therefor.

For Walter de Bruges. And order to the sheriff of Shropshire to permit the aforesaid W. to have that respite. The king, at the instance of Master Rostand, has granted to Master Walter de Bruges that, concerning 92½ m. at which he was amerced before Master Simon of Walton and his associates lately itinerant in Shropshire, namely of 100s. for a fine in order that he may be under pledge, 30 m. for several trespasses, 40 m. for having his lands and chattels, and of 15 m. of a fine for a trespass of his father, he is to render five marks at the Exchequer of Michaelmas in the fortieth year and five marks at the Exchequer of Easter next following, and thus 10 m. from year to year at the same terms until the aforesaid 92½ m. shall have been paid. And because the aforementioned Master made surety to the king concerning the keeping of the aforesaid terms by Henry abbot of Shrewsbury, order to the barons of the Exchequer to cause him to have those terms and it to be done and enrolled thus, and to cause 100s. which he paid of the aforesaid debts to the sheriff of Shropshire by distraint, to be allowed to him in the aforesaid debts.

For the abbot of Shrewsbury. The king has granted to the abbot of Shrewsbury, concerning 49 m. in which he is bound to the king for several debts, that he is to render six marks to the king at the Exchequer of Michaelmas in the fortieth year and 6 m. at the Exchequer of Easter next following, and so from year to year 12 m. at the same terms until the aforesaid 49 m. shall have been paid to the king, so that in the last term in the fourth year he is to pay 7 m. at the aforesaid Exchequer which then shall remain to be rendered of the aforesaid 49 m. Order to the barons of the Exchequer to cause him to have those terms, and it to be done and enrolled thus.

Fulk fitz Warin junior has made fine with the king by two marks of gold or 20 m. of silver to be paid into the king’s Wardrobe at next Pentecost for having justices, namely the abbot of Pershore and the sheriff of Herefordshire, go and determine the dispute between the same Fulk and John fitz Alan in the marches of Wales. ¹ Afterwards he paid 20 m. into the Wardrobe and is quit.
