Because the king has learnt for certain that it is to his advantage if he should cause his land next to the great fish-pond of Marlborough, namely between the king’s vill of Marlborough and the bridge of Okeburn’, to be valued and leased out, order to approach (accedatis) the same land in person and to cause the aforesaid land to be valued and leased by the oath of trustworthy and law-worthy men, as shall seem best for the king’s use, and when they shall have caused that land to be leased out they are to cause the barons of the Exchequer to know about the same lease well and faithfully made, so that the king’s constable of Marlborough, for the time he is constable, is able to answer to the king at the Exchequer for that lease and profit.

To the archbishops, bishops, abbots, priors, earls, barons, knights, free men and all others holding of the castle and county of York. Whereas on account of the safety and security of the king and his most beloved first-born son Edward and for the conservation of the peace and tranquility of the king’s realm, the king has granted to the same Edward custody of the king’s castle and county of York with everything pertaining to the aforesaid castle and county from St. John the Baptist next through three years following, in the form provided by the counsel of prelates and magnates who are of the king’s council, and the same king’s son committed the custody of the aforesaid castle and county together with everything pertaining to them to the king’s beloved and faithful Roger Extraneus under the same during the aforesaid three years, so that if the same king’s son returns to England from parts overseas to which he is to go in aid of the Holy Land and he wishes to resume (‘resumere’) the aforesaid castle and county, he is to have and hold the same castle and county throughout the time in the form provided between the king and the same, and so that the same Edward or the aforesaid Roger under him are to answer to the king for the issues proceeding therefrom at the Exchequer just as other of the king’s keepers of the same castle and county were accustomed to answer, the king having accepted that commission orders them to be 1 as intendant and respondent to the same Roger as keeper of the aforesaid castle and county under the aforementioned Edward in all things which pertain to that custody, just as is aforesaid. The king has taken the homage of Robert de Nevill’ who [took to wife] Mary first-born daughter and one of the heiresses of Ralph son of Ralph deceased who held of the king in chief and has caused them to have seisin of the third part of the inheritance formerly of the aforesaid Ralph as their share falling to the same from the aforesaid inheritance, which is enrolled on the dorse of the Close Roll. 1 Order to John de Reygate, escheator beyond the Trent, that having accepted security from the aforementioned Robert and Mary for rendering their reasonable relief to the king at the Exchequer by reason of the third part of the aforesaid inheritance falling to the same, to cause [them] to have full seisin in the form aforesaid. Likewise, in the same manner order to John le Moyne, escheator this side of the Trent, concerning the purparty falling to the same Robert and Mary of the inheritance formerly of the aforesaid Ralph, saving dower etc., as contained in the aforesaid purparty. 2 The king has also taken the homage of Robert de Tatershale who took to wife Joan second-born daughter and one of the heiresses of the aforesaid Ralph for the third part of the inheritance formerly of the aforesaid Ralph. Order to the escheator beyond the Trent that, having accepted security from the aforementioned Robert and Joan for their reasonable relief etc. by reason of the third part of the inheritance etc. to the same etc. Order also in the same manner to the escheator this side of the Trent concerning the purparty of the same Robert and Joan falling [to them] from the inheritance etc., saving dower etc. It is likewise written to the same escheators to retain in the king’s hand the third part of the aforesaid inheritance falling to Anastasia younger daughter and an heiress of the aforesaid Ralph who is under age and in the king’s wardship, namely the third part both of the lands and tenements formerly of the aforesaid Robert de Nevill’ which the aforesaid Robert de Nevill’ and Mary and Robert de Tatershale and Joan hold in free marriage and of other lands and tenements formerly of the aforesaid Ralph to have as their purparty of the aforesaid inheritance, just as aforesaid, just as is more fully contained on the dorse of the Close Roll for this year.[S’, in the Roll]
