Because the king observes that Elias de Rabeyn, to whom he committed the custody of his castle of Divizes and his forests of Cippeham and Melkesham with appurtenances, will be able to attend to the custody of the manor of Rowde more conveniently than any other, he commits custody of the same manor of Rowde with appurtenances to the same Elias for as long as it pleases the king, rendering therefor per annum at the Exchequer as much as other keepers of the same manor have been accustomed to render.

Because Roger de Leyburn who held the custody of the king’s seven hundreds of Waldis of bail of the king throughout his life has died, the king for the greater security of the defences of his castle of Dover has committed the custody of the aforesaid seven hundreds with appurtenances to Stephen de Penecestre [Penhurst], constable of the same castle, for as long as it pleases the king so that he is to answer at the Exchequer in the same manner in which others of the king’s keepers were accustomed to answer. The king has taken the homage of William de Leyburn son and heir of Roger de Leyburn deceased for all the lands and tenements which the aforementioned Roger his father held of the king in chief on the day he died and he has rendered those lands and tenements to him. Order to Master Richard de Clifford, escheator this side of the Trent, that having accepted security from the aforementioned William for rendering his reasonable relief to the king at his Exchequer and retaining in the king’s hand the manors of Bodun’, Ashford, Bukewell, Packmanstone and Warehorne and all the land formerly of Margery de Vernun in Suho, of which Eleanor countess of Winchester, who was the wife of the aforementioned Roger, says the aforementioned Roger and she were jointly enfeoffed and concerning which the aforementioned William and the countess have displayed their damage in respect thereof before the king and his council, to cause the same William to have full seisin of all the lands and tenements which the aforementioned Roger held of the king in chief, and of which he was seised in his demesne as of fee on the day he died and which, by reason of his death were taken into the king’s hand, nevertheless saving to the aforementioned Eleanor her reasonable dower falling to her of the lands and tenements formerly of the aforesaid Roger to be assigned by the king’s hand, so that those lands and tenements, concerning which she ought to be endowed by the king, are to be taken back into the king’s hand so that he may assign them to her, to hold in the name of dower, just as aforesaid.

Whereas the king has commanded Master Richard de Clifford, his escheator on this side of the Trent, on several occasions that, the extent of all lands and tenements of which Phillip Basset, who has lately died and who held from the king in chief, was seised in his demesne as of fee on the day he died, having been taken and the truth having been inquired as to the age of Phillip’s heir, as is the custom in the kingdom, he was to send the aforesaid extent and inquisition to the king under his seal, and whereas the same escheator has disdained to do this up to now to the manifest damage of Roger Bigod, earl of Norfolk and marshal of England, and Alina, his wife, heir of the aforesaid Phillip, whereby the aforesaid lands and tenements remain uncultivated and the seed unsown, on account of which the abovesaid earl has come to the king on many occasions and has prayed for a process that the king would assist him in this matter, the king, for the good service of the same earl and wishing to do him grace in as much as it can be done while saving the king’s indemnity and without prejudice to the king, has granted that the aforesaid lands and tenements falling to the inheritance of Phillip Basset by any right of inheritance might be cultivated and sown by his bailiffs, as it seems best to him, saving to the king the other issues of the aforesaid lands and tenements that shall pertain to him therefrom according to the law and custom of his kingdom until the abovesaid earl will come to the king and do in this matter what ought by right be done, so that no prejudice is caused to the king or his heirs by that act of grace, and so that that act of grace shall not be drawn into a custom or precedent in times to come.
